Yakutian Laika

This working breed originated in the Yakutia region of the Russian Siberia and, in ancient times, the dogs were employed by the native Sakha people as universal animals. They were used for hunting, reindeer herding, and as draft animals, as well as the family pet. Often times, their pelts were used in religious ceremonies. Their most important role was in transportation. The Sakha became the first known people to use dogs to pull sleds.

The vibrant pastel colors used for rendering the aurora in this case were chosen to reflect the gentle family oriented nature of this dog breed specifically. They were more than working dogs – being integrated heavily into the society of their human people.

Cameo Anderson is the artist. Cameo lives in Michigan with her husky named Elsker. She's been painting formal portraits of snow dogs for over 15 years as a pet portrait artist for hire. She's also illustrated husky themed storybooks for Husky Halfway House, Pine Ridge Siberians, and SaveAFox Rescue in Minnesota.  

Cameo (that's me) is known for realistic personal pet portraits, but is mostly now only offering art prints of things that live in her heart and need to come out and be shared.
